Issac Sandoval's intallation of painted metal sculptures, mixed media paintings and welded
assemblages conjures up Alice in Wonderland-like dinners, low-rider culture and pop figures
from film and television—while evoking significant moments from art history.
A Mutant Ninja Turtle evokes Donatello's David, while alien arms beckon from the partial remains
of a crashed VW spececraft... and a smaller-than-lifesize Yoda playfully reigns at the head of a
long table of wildly decorated cakes. Even Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass are injected into
this fanciful free association of cultural residue, both found and remembered.
Sandoval paints on found objects, including car hoods and road signs. He also paints on welded
and cast sculptures of his own making, a departure from the raw rust and worked metallic textures
usually found in such sculpture.
One wants to feel and taste Sandoval's lush deserts—that in all likelihood would crack one's
teeth. Such is Sandoval's art: glorious and outrageous sweets that both seduce and threaten.
