SHAWNA WANGSENG at Royal Mastodon Society
Shawna's large mixed media paintings and small sculptures evoke multiple realities in the space
they occupy.
Her canvases are sliced, glued, layered and sewn into. Lace both veils and defines surfaces.
Multi-layered fabric skirts surround paintings viewed in the round. Even her wall pieces have
a 3-dimensional presence.
Imagery evoking vast farmlands and small, nearly claustrophobic interiors populated with
enigmatic figures provide point and counterpoint to groupings of smaller, self-contained and
strangely intense sculptural work.
Airy, swirling clouds of horses, magically airlifted away from a precarious past toward a hopeful
future undulate in the suddenly palpable atmosphere.
Her work presents a sheer physicality that is very real. The imagery, formed or painted moments
invoke a compressed, nearly film-like parallel reality. As one walks amongst, and between the
large works, one becomes aware of one's own presence in the space, and thinks, "This too, is Real".
